Red Swimsuit
w25″ x h22″ oil on canvas
One of my mentors encouraged me to be an artist instead of something else.
She told me to be bold and to do what my heart suggested. I was a bit afraid of
her fierce self until I learned to make light of it and laugh, and then she laughed
too, and we got along well. This is a painting I did that reminds me of her, a bold
woman in a bright red swimsuit. She is flying on the beach with the bluebirds in
her heart. She said, “Life is about Love.” I thank her for that.
Contemplation
w18″ x h20″ oil on canvas
Look up and away from the physical world, contemplate the sky, and what is
beyond that? Is it more solid planets, burning stars, meteors, black holes, and
aliens? Or maybe it’s a consciousness beyond and within all that, always here,
cheering us on, guarding and guiding us. After exploring that option for a little
while, things that seem out of balance, or without harmony, will often shift a bit,
or a lot, for the better.
Woman Reading, with a large cat under the bed
w52″ x h39″ oil on canvas
Cats equal well-being in my mind. They are not always perfect, but there is
something Buddha-ish about a contented cat, cozy, smiling, and exuding
equanimity. And notice there’s an empty bowl, always intriguing, reminding me
of a calm and open mind.
Wild Ride
31″ x 35″ oil on canvas
This painting came from a week in Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo Reservation
in New Mexico with the Taos Art School. There was a heavy thunderstorm at the
end of a great week of working and riding horseback with our Navajo guides. At
sundown, fearful lest we all be washed away in a flash flood, we needed to
load up and ride out of the canyon, quick. Four gutsy women and I rode out
with the Navajo horsemen and their herd of horses. It was a terrific, fast-paced
ride I will never forget.
50% of the funds from the purchase of this painting will be donated to a worthy cause. My favorite for this painting is:
The Story Dancer Project. The person who buys it can help me decide.
The Card Players
24” x 24” oil on canvas
On a trip to Portugal, we visited the Castelo de São Jorge, high above
Lisbon. A proper castle with a moat, no longer filled with water, a fortress
with small slits in the walls for shooting arrows to protect the inhabitants,
Ancient, built in the fifth century. There is now an ultra-modern gift shop, bar,
and restaurant. There are tourists, locals, and old grandmothers dressed in black.
A group of older gents entranced me; this appeared to be a daily ritual for
them, to come here every day, play cards and gossip at the limestone table,
seated on the limestone cubes, by an ancient castle wall. It is a steep climb to
the castle’s center where all the action is. I suspect they stay there all day long.
The Passing of Flower Woman
36″w x 28″h Oil on canvas
Flower Woman was a beautiful and elegant creature who, like most of us, had
created a world around herself. She is making the transition from this world to the
next.
At her side are two beings, one who easily makes the transition, climbing up and
down the ladder, and another, whom she will be leaving behind. Both are sitting
by her side, quietly, lovingly, and openly, assisting in her peaceful passing.
It is interesting how many people are uncomfortable talking about death and
dying. If we consider it a transition, it becomes no longer sad or morbid but a
joyous, sacred occasion. A transition in consciousness. This painting came from a
sketch I made as my mother was passing on.
Large Yellow Cat Forking in the Right Direction
48″w x 35″h Oil on canvas
I have friends who like to talk about an idea called “forking in the right direction.”
It’s a very good idea. You know when you are struggling to think of something
nice to say or think, and finally, you come up with something? It may take some
effort, but that’s what it means. A moment in time, an open mind, looking for
the good, listening for guidance on the best way to go, and then taking that
path, that’s all.
